The Seer without a Future

I took this photo in a fair at the Race Course Park (now renamed the ‘Jilani Park’). The renaming of old buildings and roads is a separate rant, so I won’t get into it right now :-)

The ‘Palmist’ himself was an interesting figure, and his marketing ploy was what made me take the photo. ‘Only God Knows Better’, well maybe, maybe not. What is also interesting to note is the mixing of pseudo sciences, Palmistry and Astrology, which he seems to be unaware of. (Well also the different spellings of his name).

But what is ultimately the most ironic part of the photo is that the seer sitting there in his makeshift booth telling people about their future is unaware that he doesn’t have much of one himself.

we have all sorts of guys working in this field and many of them in pretty much the same condition as you depicted. But believe me there are guys minting a lot of money---sometimes from very educated poeple. I recall an interview of our speaker national assembly who said that his becoming a speaker was a prophecy coming true.
i have had first hand experience recently. Theres a guy in pakistan who claims that he can predict the present and future by listening to the voice over a telephone. To check him one of my visitors at work rang him up in Pakistan. After a while he had a look of astonishment on his face. when he put the reciever down, he told me that the guy was absolutely right about the facts---his father's name--his business-his medical condition bla bla bla. what was surprising was that this guy had not been to Pakistan for some 5 years now and there was no link. I dont know what to make out from it. Im certainly not an ardent believer in it---just a skeptic but maybe--just maybe some of them do have certain means.
Whether its just an intelligent guess or some real ability-- u can never be exactly sure of that. However this confusion does favor these phony workers.
I recall August comte's assesment of religion here--- imagination of an ignorant--he said. Whatever we cant explain is the supernatural. But if that is so then this is going to exist forever--for we can never be sure whether we know enough.
